‘Cooked Chook & Bread Rolls’

Cooked Chook & Bread Rolls marks Tervo\u2019s first mural for Brisbane Street Art Festival and his first full execution of what he describes as \u201cMulletism\u201d. Mulletism is a distinctly Australian visual approach that is business in the front and party in the back, with detailed foreground and expressive background creating depth. The work was painted for the foyer of a building already holding murals by some of Australia\u2019s leading artists, giving the piece an added sense of pressure, ambition and arrival. For Tervo, it became a statement of intent. It was an opportunity to put forward the strongest work he could make and to earn his place within that company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mural uses a limited blue palette for the Paddington landscape, mixed into dark, mid and light tones and applied quickly and loosely. Against this, the foreground is painted in warmer colours with sharper detail. That contrast creates a strong visual separation, pulling the foreground forward and giving the image its energy and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its core, the work is a celebration of Australian identity and the way culture is carried through everyday food. Growing up in a neighbourhood shaped by European influence, Tervo was taught that good Italian food was simple, generous and made to feed a family. That led him to a broader question: what is Australian food? His answer is the familiar suburban meal of a supermarket roast chook, bread rolls, pasta salad and butter. A meal shared by tired families after work just as easily as around a pool in summer. In that sense, the mural is both playful and sincere. It treats the ordinary as iconic and frames a deeply recognisable food ritual as a portrait of contemporary Australian life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
