Bio

Tervo is a Brisbane-based artist working across portraiture, painting and mural practice. His visual language is shaped by graffiti, street art and contemporary Australian identity. He works across acrylic, house paint, pen and aerosol, and favours vibrant colour, bold contrast and direct mark-making. His process is instinctive and physical. He often paints with colour straight from the tube and mixes on the surface, reflecting the way aerosol is used.

His work is driven by themes of Australiana, introspection and humour. Tervo is the son of a Finnish father and an Australian mother. He grew up in a multicultural neighbourhood where many families, like his own, were shaped by European heritage. For a long time, that mix felt ordinary. Later, it led him to question what it actually means to be Australian. This remains a strong thread in his practice. He looks beyond tourism clichés and easy symbols. He is interested in the deeper motifs, contradictions and shared experiences that shape Australian identity.

Art has also been one of his main tools for self-exploration. Since his teens, Tervo has used making as a way to think through identity, mental health and the gap between public image and private truth. This sits at the centre of his portraiture. He is less interested in façade than in recognition. His aim is to present sitters in a way that feels true to those who know them best, while also exploring common ground through vulnerability, character and shared human experience.

Across studio work and public projects, Tervo brings together emotional honesty, visual boldness and a distinctly Australian point of view.
